तस्मात् उ ह एवम्विद् यदि अपि चण्डालाय उच्छिष्टम् प्रयच्छेत् आत्मनि ह एव अस्य तत् वैश्वानरे हुतम् स्यात् इति तत् एषः श्लोकः

Therefore one who knows this, even if he gives the remnants of his food to a caṇḍāla, will thereby have offered it in the Vaiśvānara-ātman. Of this there is this verse:

The chapter's boldest verse. Leftovers (ucchiṣṭa) are ritually impure; a caṇḍāla is one whom ritual society barred from the sacrifice. And now: a knower who gives scraps to a caṇḍāla "offers a sacrifice in the Vaiśvānara-ātman" — performs a full act of worship. For one who sees the All-human One there is no unworthy recipient: in a hungry caṇḍāla the same Vaiśvānara eats as in the sacrificial fire; alms to an outcast are an oblation into the very mouth of God.
Vedic strictness is not abolished here but surpassed from within: the purity of the rite was a fence around the fire — a knower sees the fire everywhere, and the fence falls as needless. This is the height at which knowledge becomes indistinguishable from love: paṇḍitāḥ sama-darśinaḥ — "the wise see with an equal eye a brāhmaṇa, a cow, an elephant, a dog and an eater of dogs" (BG 5.18). Service of God in every living being is no later sentimentality but a direct conclusion of the Vaiśvānara-vidyā, drawn by the vidyā itself.
