Higher and ever higher becomes [the life] of him, and higher and ever higher are the worlds he conquers, who, knowing this thus, venerates in the vital powers the fivefold sāman that is higher-and-ever-higher. So much for the fivefold.

The fruit of the inward upāsanā is boundless increase: parovarīyo hāsya bhavati — "higher and ever higher becomes his [being]" — parovarīyaso ha lokāñ jayati — "and ever higher worlds he conquers": the formula of the endless udgītha (1.9!) is now applied to a man contemplating his own powers as an ascending song.
iti tu pañcavidhasya — "so much for the fivefold": the seal on the adhyāya's first half. Five fields have been traversed: the universe (the worlds), the elements (rain and waters), time (the year), life (the cattle), man (the prāṇas) — and everywhere one and the same five-beat concord: the Upaniṣad has taught us to hear the sāman throughout the whole vertical section of being. Next comes a more elaborate instrument: the sevenfold sāman — and its first field will be… speech itself.
