Its upper gate is the udāna; that is Vāyu, that is space. One should venerate it as "vigour and greatness". Vigorous and great becomes he who knows thus.

The upper gate is the heart's zenith: the udāna — Vāyu — ākāśa: the upward-leading breath (which carries the soul aloft — Praśna 3.7!), the wind, and the expanse itself: the gate of the vertical. Its veneration is ojaś ca mahaś ca — "vigour and greatness" (mahas is that very "Great", the fourth vyāhṛti of the Taittirīya!).
The five gates have been walked: east-sun, south-moon, west-fire, north-rain, above-space: the heart proves to be a temple of five sides, joined to the whole universe by five breaths. The upper gate is the one by which men go out to the Standing sun: its warder, the udāna, will carry the knower along the vertical (and hence its gift is vigour and greatness: the vertical takes strength).
