When the apāna is satisfied, speech is satisfied; when speech is satisfied, fire is satisfied; when fire is satisfied, the earth is satisfied; when the earth is satisfied, everything is satisfied that stands under the earth and fire. And after their satisfaction he himself is satisfied — with offspring, cattle, food, vigour and the lustre of Brahman.

The third chain: apāna → speech → fire → earth. The bond of speech with fire is as old as the Veda: a word burns and warms, and fire is the "speech" of the universe; in the Vaiśvānara's body speech was the fuel of the human fire (5.7.1). And the earth is the All-human One's feet: the lower breath feeds the lower tier of the Body — everything coincides.
Notice how the chains divide the universe without remainder: sun and heaven, moon and quarters, fire and earth… Five mouthfuls cover the whole composition of the world. A knower's meal is a miniature of the world-sacrifice: on one palm there fits that same universal feeding by which the gods sustain the worlds (5.4–5.9).
