He who venerates the waters as Brahman obtains all desires and becomes satisfied; he is free to move as he wishes everywhere that the waters reach." — "Sir, is there anything greater than the waters?" — "There is something greater than the waters." — "Tell it to me, sir."

The reward of the waters is a special one: āpnoti sarvān kāmān tṛptimān bhavati — "he obtains all desires and becomes satisfied". The grammar itself plays: āpaḥ (waters) — āpnoti (obtains): the waters are the very element of attaining-and-satisfying; by nature they slake.
But the Upaniṣad has already trained us: a slaking within the bounds of a rung is not the final slaking. The soul's full tṛṣṇā, its thirst, is taken by no moisture of this world; only the Bhūman, the Boundless, will quench it, and a few rungs remain to it. For now, upward: from the waters to the heat that draws them forth into the light.
