And the white shining of the sun is "sā", and what is blue, beyond-black is "ama": that makes "sāma". Now that golden Puruṣa who is seen within the sun — golden-bearded, golden-haired, all golden to the very tips of his nails…

The verse for whose sake the whole khaṇḍa has been running: atha ya eṣo 'ntarāditye hiraṇmayaḥ puruṣo dṛśyate — "now that golden Puruṣa who is seen within the sun": in the core of the luminary there is neither plasma nor principle: there is a Face. And the portrait comes with exulting concreteness: hiraṇya-śmaśruḥ — golden-bearded! hiraṇya-keśaḥ — golden-haired! ā praṇakhāt sarva eva suvarṇaḥ — "to the very tips of his nails all golden": the Puruṣa in the sun has a beard, hair, nails: the Upaniṣad is not afraid of the image — it triumphs in it.
This is one of the throne-texts of all Vaiṣṇava Vedānta: the Lord seen in the solar disc (Gītā 10.21: "among lights I am the radiant sun"; Īśa 16: "withdraw thy rays, that I may see thy fairest form"!). dṛśyate — "is seen": not "is thought", not "is postulated" — seen: by contemplatives whose gaze has passed through the white and the dark (verse 1.6.5). The gold here is not metal but the light of a person: radiance gathered into a form; impersonal effulgence is only the hem of His body (Brahma-saṁhitā: "the effulgence is the rays of His form").
