"When a man cleaves fast, then he has faith; without cleaving fast, he has no faith: only one who cleaves fast has faith. But cleaving fast must be sought to be comprehended." — "I seek to comprehend cleaving fast, sir."

The fourth condition: niṣṭhā — steadfast cleaving, a devoted standing-by one thing. Faith does not grow in a deserter: to trust, one must stand by what one trusts — as a pupil "stands by" his teacher (ni-ṣṭhā is literally "a standing near"). The unsteady believes nothing, because he stands by nothing.
This word will become one of the key terms of India's whole spiritual vocabulary: niṣṭhā, the establishedness of which the Gītā says "twofold is the niṣṭhā in this world" (BG 3.3), and which bhakti counts as a stage of maturity on the path (after it come taste, attachment, feeling…). Sanatkumāra discloses its place: steadfastness is the soil of faith. Whoever wants to believe more deeply should seek not proofs but an end to his running from one thing to another.
