"Suppose, my dear, that a man were led away from Gandhāra with his eyes bound and abandoned in a desolate place. He would cry out to the east, to the north, to the south and to the west: 'I was led here with my eyes bound! I was abandoned with my eyes bound!'

The seventh parable is a whole tale in two verses: a man is carried off from Gandhāra (his native country in the north-west), his eyes are bound, he is taken into the wilds and abandoned. He cries out to all four quarters — and in that cry the Upaniṣad recognises the voice of every soul in saṁsāra: carried off from its homeland, abandoned in a wilderness with the eyes of the passions bound, and all its thrashing about is a cry to four quarters that does not know the way home.
Every stroke is exact: the soul has a homeland (it is not "from nowhere" in this forest); its eyes were bound by someone (ignorance is not natural but imposed); and its cry is sincere but useless — without unbound eyes and a direction pointed out, the quarters are all alike. Philosophies, religions, wanderings from teacher to teacher are often only a cry in different directions; what is needed is not a cry but One who unbinds. He will appear in the next verse — and the parable will name him with an exact word.
