Pravāhaṇa's answer is the summit of the whole chase: asya lokasya kā gatir iti — "what is the going of this world?" — ākāśa iti hovāca — "Space": sarvāṇi ha vā imāni bhūtāny ākāśād eva samutpadyante — "all these beings arise from space alone" — ākāśaṁ praty astaṁ yanti — "and go down into space [as luminaries set behind the horizon]": ākāśo hy evaibhyo jyāyān — "for space is greater than they": ākāśaḥ parāyaṇam — "space is the final resort".
Ākāśa here is not physical ether but a name of the Unbounded: the container out of which all is and in which all is (the Chāndogya will later disclose it through Śāṇḍilya's mouth and in the eighth adhyāya: "the space within the heart" is Brahman's dwelling; and at 8.14: "space is the revealer of name and form… that is Brahman"). The chain of the sāman's supports has been carried up to the Supportless, because He is the support of all: only upon the All-containing can an unending song stand. The formula janma-sthiti-laya ("they arise — they set") is the very one by which the Taittirīya defined Brahman; Pravāhaṇa has uttered the definition of the Absolute under the name "space".
