पराशरात्मजो विद्वान् ब्रह्मर्षिः संशितव्रतः ।
मातुर् नियोगाद् धर्मात्मा गाङ्गेयस्य च धीमतः ॥
क्षेत्रे विचित्रवीर्यस्य कृष्णद्वैपायनः पुरा ।
त्रीन् अग्नीन् इव कौरव्याञ् जनयाम् आस वीर्यवान् ॥
उत्पाद्य धृतराष्ट्रं च पाण्डुं विदुरम् एव च ।
जगाम तपसे धीमान् पुनर् एवाश्रमं प्रति ॥
parāśarātmajo vidvān brahmarṣiḥ saṃśitavrataḥ |
mātur niyogād dharmātmā gāṅgeyasya ca dhīmataḥ ||
kṣetre vicitravīryasya kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ purā |
trīn agnīn iva kauravyāñ janayām āsa vīryavān ||
utpādya dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ ca pāṇḍuṃ viduram eva ca |
jagāma tapase dhīmān punar evāśramaṃ prati ||
The learned son of Parashara — a brahmarshi, firm in his vows, righteous of soul — at the bidding of his mother and of the wise Gangeya (Bhishma), the mighty Krishna-Dvaipayana once begot the Kauravas, like three sacred fires, in the wombs of Vichitravirya's wives. Having begotten Dhritarashtra, Pandu, and Vidura, the sage withdrew once more to his hermitage for austerities.

When the house of Kuru faced extinction, Vyasa, at the bidding of his mother Satyavati and with the assent of the wise Bhishma, continued the dynasty by begetting Dhritarashtra, Pandu, and Vidura — ‘like three sacred fires,’ that is, filled with the power of dharma. Having fulfilled this duty, he returned at once to his austerities. Here is an image of selfless action (nishkama-karma): the sage brings kings into the world yet desires neither throne nor inheritance for himself, and departs at once for his hermitage. In this way the lineage is preserved in which, in time, the deeds of Lord Krishna and His devotees the Pandavas will unfold. Vyasa's detachment is an example of how a devotee acts for a higher purpose, without attachment to the fruits.
