भारतस्य वपुर् ह्य् एतत् सत्यं चामृतम् एव च ।
नवनीतं यथा दध्नो द्विपदां ब्राह्मणो यथा ॥
ह्रदानाम् उदधिः श्रेष्ठो गौर् वरिष्ठा चतुष्पदाम् ।
यथैतानि वरिष्ठानि तथा भारतम् उच्यते ॥

bhāratasya vapur hy etat satyaṃ cāmṛtam eva ca |
navanītaṃ yathā dadhno dvipadāṃ brāhmaṇo yathā ||
hradānām udadhiḥ śreṣṭho gaur variṣṭhā catuṣpadām |
yathaitāni variṣṭhāni tathā bhāratam ucyate ||

Translation

Indeed, this [table of contents] is the essence of the 'Bharata' — truth and nectar. As butter is [the essence] of curds, as the brahmin is [the foremost] among the two-footed, as the ocean is the best among bodies of water, as the cow is the foremost among the four-footed — so, as these are foremost, the 'Bharata' is called the foremost [of scriptures].
