Bṛhad-bhāgavatāmṛta

The work of Sanātana Gosvāmī, senior among the six Vṛndāvana teachers, and the companion to his younger brother Rūpa's Laghu-bhāgavatāmṛta: that book treats tattva, this one the path. Both khaṇḍas are built as journeys and written as narrative rather than treatise. The first, "Where the Lord's Mercy Is Fullest", follows Nārada: seeking the one to whom the Lord is most merciful, he goes from a brāhmaṇa householder to a king, from the king to Indra, to Brahmā, to Śiva, to Prahlāda, Hanumān, the Pāṇḍavas, Uddhava — each pointing onward, until the road ends in Vraja among the gopīs. The second, "The Glory of Goloka", follows Gopa-kumāra, a cowherd boy of Govardhana who received a mantra from a passing brāhmaṇa: he passes through Svarga, Maharloka, Tapoloka, Satyaloka, the effulgence of Brahman, Vaikuṇṭha, Ayodhyā and Dvārakā, and at every stage the same restlessness meets him, until he returns to the very land he started from. The book's answer is plain: above all worlds stands the village where God is taken for the neighbour's son; and the earthly Mathurā differs in nothing from Goloka. The reading unit is the verse, numbered by khaṇḍa, chapter and verse.
